It is the smallest municipality in the county and has the smallest land area of any community in it. It is located on the edge of Missouri's Ozark Mountains and ZIP code 62601 has a population density of only 9 people per square mile (3/km²). The town was founded in 1837 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Lucy as a trading post on the east fork of the Canadian River. They named their settlement after François-René de La Salle, Sieur de la Salle, who had explored that portion of North America within present-day Illinois and Arkansas before his death in 1759. French traders had first established Fort Leavenworth on this site in 1763 during France's war with Great Britain over control of St Louis region from Spain. In 1840, Captain Polk reestablished permanent habitation here when he became United States Minister to Mexico City; he donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse on this location which were built between 1841 and 1843. In 1868 Cape Girardeau incorporated as an unincorporated community under territorial government control; it became an incorporated city on May 3, 1903. On November 3, 1912 Cape Girardeau voters passed a resolution authorizing incorporation into a new state called "Missouri" following Kansas' admission to the Union as that state; however, no action was taken until December 15 when Missour
