In 1865, Growth came about when water droplets from a nearby volcano caused steam to escape from a coal mine and create an Illumination Works which began producing light fixtures for homes and businesses around this time In 1886, the electric light company arrived with their own power plant and soon enough churches were built as well as other businesses such as banks By 1912 there were over 300 businesses active here There were also several hospitals throughout this time including one built on a parcel of land donated by General George Sperry . After World War I ended hostilities ceased across much of Europe so many people streamed into America looking for opportunities This led to an influx of African Americans who had been working on farms or waiting for transport to cross the US border into Illinois started coming to work at various establishments such as hotels and restaurants opening up shop here too When Prohibition came along shortly thereafter most of these stores closed but some continued doing business under new names like Key restaurant which still exists today Although changes have come about since then with more job growth within white collar jobs while blackcollar employment has shrunk overall – especially with recent expansions into retail – downtown Cape Girardeau continues to see heavy development due both to its increasing population density as well as its location within easy access of major highways making it easy for workers to get here or go back home
