Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri and the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 94,521. The area that became Cape Girardeau was settled by French settlers in 1764. It became a slaveholding town until 1821, when it emancipated its slaves. The first settler in Cape Girardeau was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable who landed on what is now called "Hollywood" Island in 1764 and built his house there. He named it "Girard de la Cote" after his old home at La Rochelle (France). In 1820, a post office was established at cape girardeau with Captain John Smith as first mail carrier. The town grew rapidly due to its location near major transportation arteries and its access to timber and other resources. By 1830, cape girardeau had a population of over 10,000 people. The Panic of 1837 caused an economic recession in Missouri which affected cape girardeau especially hard; many families were forced to leave their homes or sell them for lack of money to cover their mortgages while they tried to save their homes from foreclosure. The economy improved following the recovery started by President Andrew Jackson in 1840, but did not return to pre-Panic levels until around 1860 when new railroad lines began carrying traffic into the city from Illinois and Iowa Territory. In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant took control of all Mobile Bay areas north of Baton Rouge so Confederate General Robert E Price could not blockade him supplies coming through Mobile Bay from Mississippi River Valley sources land east of Baton Rouge and including within Cape Girardeaus boundaries (see also Battle of Prairie Grove). In this atmosphere price increased military production just outside Confederate lines giving Union forces an advantage during times such as these leading up to Appomattox Court House where Price surrendered on April 9th 1865

The town of cape girardeau was platted in 1819 and named after General James G. caramel who fought in the American Revolutionary War as a brigadier general under General Anthony Wayne. The city's history stretches back to 1764 when settlers began moving into what is now Cape Girardeau from Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1801, the first school was built in cape girardeausite and it served as the town's only school until 1857 when a new school was built on State Street which still serves as the city's primary educational institution today. In 1865, while skirmishing with Native Americans near present-day downtown cape girardeausite, local militia member Captain Samuel Silliman killed three of their number with his carbine while under cover of darkness; this event is generally cited as the beginning of organized violence between Native Americans and white settlement in eastern Missouri. In 1886, an act providing for municipal government within limits set off a series of civic improvements that included enlarging and reconstructing both the original courthouse building (now known as the old state capitol) and creating what are now four blocks of downtown core - from Second Street east to Third Street - which remain some of its most important business districts to this day including several banks and other large commercial buildings dating back to at least the 19th century including one currently occupied by AIG headquarters located on Illinois Boulevard across from City Hall).
