Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1837 by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Child as a trading post on the Illinois River between Cape Girardeau and White Sands Lake. The first settler in Cape Girardeau was John Irwin who arrived in 1836 from Massachusetts. This was followed by David Cramer in 1837 and Amos Kendall in 1840. By 1850 there were ninety-seven families living here with a total of 527 acres (209 ha). In 1861, the town site was platted into blocks and named after General George Washington Carver who had donated land for it In 1865, when Cape Girardeau opened its arms to immigrants from Hungary, Poles and Slovaks numbering 471 people settled here along with twelve women entrepreneur sisters - Anna Maria Lubomirska (1815-87), Helena Wojciechowska (1820-86), Ludmilla Zamoyska (1825-96), Marfa Jankowskiowa (1794-1976), Karolina Szczepanikowska (1795-1864) – all of whom started businesses selling goods made from local materials like flour, cows’ hair or eggs collected among the farmers around them. They soon became known as "the Ladies of the Prairie" because they managed their businesses with smart marketing strategies that differentiated their products from those available on the American market This early period of growth came to an end when war broke out between America and Great Britain over control of North America during the late 1800s which led to increased exportations of manufactured goods coming into North America through Canada while also increasing competition for business opportunities within each country's borders In 1892, when Kansas Territory became Nebraska Territory following Nebraska becoming a state; cape girardeaus merchants decided to move their operations westward towards Omaha where they would find more customer demand for items produced within Nebraska .
