He purchased of land from John Bennett for $1 per acre. Weldon moved his family to this area in 1830 and started a cornfield with his brother-in-law David Lowry and eight other farmers. The town of Cape Girardeaiu began as a small village on February 14, 1834 when four men from Randolph Township petitioned for incorporation as the town of Burr Ridge on account of its location at the mouth of White River (now Iowa) and because its merchants could trade with all points northward along that stream. On May 4, 1835, when votersassembled to cast ballots for officers for the new township they found only one man present: David Lowry who had already been elected treasurer and an alternate to choose from three commissioners to attend to civil government within the new township In 1840 Isaac Henshaw founded what became known as Henshaw's Mill which manufactured flour out of wheat straw silks delivered by boat each day from St Josephs Point on Lake Michigan

The first store built here was a two-story building located on the corner of Eighth Street and State Road 912. In 1827, James Smerdon founded what would become known as Jansen's Mills which became one of the largest flour mills in the country. The Jansen Mill Complex includes three buildings: a woolen mill; a cotton gin; and an armory/fire station complex dating back to 1907 that still functions today as the headquarters for the City of Cape Girardeai

After evaluation and approval from authorities at home and abroad, the city ultimately failed to receive permission to open its airfield; however, it did help develop nearby St Joseph Air Force Base into one ofMissouri's most important aviation centers.
