Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. The first permanent European settlers in what became Cape Girardeau were two brothers who came overland from Illinois in 1837-38. They named their new settlement after George Washington's Mount Vernon: Fort Atkinson (now part of Cape Girardeau). The town quickly grew and by 1840 had a population of 100 people. In 1846, the federal government changed the name of Cape Girardeai to Springfield on the recommendation of Governor Carrington because that place had been renamed Nauvoo after General Joseph Smith's martyrdom there three years earlier. A post office called "Cape G" was established in 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. The first black person to live permanently in Cape Girardeau was Jemima Hammons born on December 12th, 1865, when she moved with her parents from Meridianville to Springfield to join her brother Milam Hinson on December 16th. In 1890, Springfield’s main depot burned down and replaced by a new one across State Street from where it now stands; this Depot served as the nucleus for what would become known as downtowncape girardaou throughout most of its history without interruption until 1990 when it went out of business again due to an unknown cause cape girardaou has few if any original buildings still standing dating back before 1960 but instead most are replacements or are reconstructed using modern materials
