Bridgeton, Missouri is a town located in the eastern part of the state of Missouri. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is bordered by Peoria to its east, Independence to its west, and Liberty to its north. The first settlement in what would become Bridgiton was made on July 6, 1827 by John Fenton and his family from Illinois. They named their new community after Brigetown, England which they had been visiting during their travels. The Fenton family continued to live in Bridgiton until 1859 when they moved to Peddleboro, Illinois. On December 12, 1847 a post office called "Bridgeton" was established at a place now known as "Stroudsburg". On January 1, 1850 it was renamed "Bridgeton". On February 14th of that year it became an incorporated village with a population of just over 100 people. On March 15th of 1860 Bridgiton had its first election as a Town Board with James Wirtz serving as Board President and George Snively as Clerk-Treasurer. That same year also saw the opening of Bridgiton's first jail which stood on Church Street for almost twenty years before being moved to West Avenue in 1974. In 1911 the town erected a monument remembranceing those who lost their lives while fighting for America during World War I including Sergeant First Class Floyd Ladd from Bridgeton and Private First Class Myron Hanks from nearby Lindsborg Township - both natives of Bridgeton themselves . In addition to commemorating American military members who have passed away since then there are also several local gravesites scattered throughout town that can be visited if you're so inclined . According to the 2000 census there were 7,569 people living in Bridgeton making it one of Missouri's fastest growing communities . With continued growth comes more businesses and residences taking up space within what once seemed like an isolated community . The first permanent settler arrived about 1840 and named his land "Bridgeton" after Missourian Brigitte de Valois who had come to the area in 1824. In 1854, businessman Elijah Perkins donated 2,000 acres (8 km2) of land that included present-day Bridgeton to the town for development as a commercial center with rail access and a library. In 1889, local naturalist John Muir visited Bridgeton and sketched what he called "the most beautiful valley I ever saw". As Muir's popularity grew among Americans across the country, interest in visiting his home territory of Montana waned among residents of Missouri until he came to town in 1890 to open up nature reserves nearby. Muir's visit helped revived interest in living near nature and made Bridgeton an attractive place for people from all walks of life to live and work. A severe tornado outbreak struck central Missouri on April 20–24, 1916 which caused damage in both eastern & western suburbs including downtown Bridgeton; total destruction was reported at $6 million dollars ($ million today). One hundred years later on May 14th 2017 another EF3 tornado touched down just east of downtownBrandywine Heights damaging homes & businesses but no deaths were reported
