A post office called Belleville was established in 1821, and the town began to grow rapidly due to its location near the new Missouri River crossing. In 1836, when organized township form within Clay County, Belleville became one of its first townships. During World War II, many Bridgeton residents volunteered for military service. Many homes were used as barracks or manufacturing plants during the war years. After the war ended, many people returned to their normal lives; however, some remain involved with local community organizations today. Today's economy depends largely on agricultural production and light industry; however, there are also pockets of retail and professional services activity hereabouts. One notable example is Mid-America Plastics which has a plant located in nearby Raytown off I-435 just south of town proper on State Route 442 (formerly US 71). This company produces polycarbonate materials for a variety of products such as bottles and cans that are exported all over North America and Europe.

It slowly declined until it ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality in 1971.
