The first settlers in Bridgeton were Methodists who began arriving in the mid-19th century. A post office was established in 1885, and mail service was available until 1907. The first mill in Bridgeton was built by J.G. Love in 1888, and it continued to be used until 1961 when it was replaced by a new mill. The second mill also operated from 1888 to 1961 but stopped production due to environmental concerns and budget cuts within the St.[1] The town developed slowly until the early 20th century when there were several large-scale industrial projects undertaken within its boundaries: a flourmill constructed on State Route 5 around 1912; an oil refinery built on land leased from DeWitt Clinton Manufacturing Company around 1925; and a housing development called "The Meadows" completed near present day Bridgeton Boulevard and I-465 in 1930s which attracted many entrepreneurs and their families fleeing rural America during the Great Depression.[2][3][4] Bridgeton experienced significant growth following World War II as manufacturing jobs were created throughout Missouri thanks to war efforts such as aluminum production[5][6][7]. However, this prosperity not only halted after 1945; it actually declined beginning with the advent of mechanization which caused companies such as Phelps Dodge Corporation to abandon certain industries while others thrived (euphemistically referred to as givebacks).[8] In 1956, Bridgeton became one of eighteen towns incorporated into Fulton County,[9] following passage of state Repository Laws No. 975 that granted municipal status retroactive theretounder for all unincorporated areas within Fulton County on December 3, 1955.[10] As per repository law § 2(b), any citizen thereof could vote “at any time” for Mayor or other officers whose terms would expire at noon on November 3 ensuing year except for members of Congress or legislators who are term limited under state Constitution article IX section XIIIA which authorizes no more than two three year terms per member per congressional district (i.e., no reelection). In effect this made Bridgeton an integral component of what is now St Louis County government since its creation over seventy years ago[11].
