It boasted a library, bank, three churches (Anglican/Methodist/Baptist), two hotels (one with a swimming pool), several businesses including four stores and three factories dating back to the nineteenth century,[1] as well as many homes built between 1910 and 1920.[2][3] In recent years Bridgeton has seen steady declines in population due to increased commuting costs and loss of jobs in nearby towns such as Springfield or Randolph. However, it remains an important stop on truck routes serving the Ozarks region while still retaining some cultural attractions such as its large Methodist church which was once listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[4]

Bridgeton, Missouri is a small town in northern Missouri that was settled in the mid-19th century. The community is named after Brigitte, the daughter of French explorer Pierre Laclede and his wife Marie-Hélène Bridgett. In 1831, Brigitte's father founded a fur trading post in what is now Bridgeton. At first, the post was successful and produced high profits for brigadier general James Wilkinson and his partners. However, by 1835, Wilkinson had lost all his money in the business and decided to sell the post. He moved his family to Quincy, Illinois and died there in 1836. The town of Bridgeton was established on an area of land that had been granted to Colonel John Sappington by treaty with the Osage Nation. Colonel Sappington built a log cabin near present day BRIDGETON while he prepared to explore the area which he believed would contain valuable minerals. In 1838, Captain Augustus Hennepin discovered gold at what is now BRIDGETON and alerted Major General George Crook of US Army headquarters about it. Crook ordered Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Davenport to investigate what he thought were mines near BRIDGETON. On July 10th,1838, Davenport discovered oil shale formations on property belonging to Captain Hennepin which led him to believe that oil might be hidden within these rocks. Davenport quickly got underway with two barrels of crude oil apiece from nearby drilled wells as part of an attempt to find new sources for fuel for American warships during the Mexican–American War (1846). The oil discoveries proved too costly and unsuccessful so Davenport sold all his rights back to Captain Hennepin on October 6th for $10,000 cash plus $500 per barrel of oil production over five years! After this success stories continued throughout America during this time period related largely due toCaptain Aiken's exploits during this time period - many people began calling him "The Oil Man" - much like today's petroleum industry! In 1861 when Kansas seceded from US Federation they appointed General John Custer as their military governor with orders not allow any black person or free colored person within their boundaries ever again! This caused great tension between white settlers living adjacent towards Kansas City (north) and those living south towards Springfield (south). There were several uprisings against Custer’s rule called "Fiji Wars". One such uprising occurred on May 1st when about 150 men under Major Elijah Muhammad gathered at Waco Creek Bridge outside Bridgeton against orders from General Custer who desired them dead! The uprising failed but resulted in some losses for local forces including 3 officers killed including one Confederate soldier named William Preston who later became known as "the Bloody Billy". Ultimately General Custer arrived late at night from Springfield reinforcements leading Confederate troops into battle without knowing what awaited them; they massacred almost all peaceful demonstrators! With news spread through social media about this event Governor Andrew Johnson sent Union soldiers intoBridgeton disguised as farmers hoping they would return peaceably since no one wanted another war? Little did they know... things wouldn't stay calm until 1865 when US Civil War started!!!
