In 1898, five years after it incorporation, Bridgeton became one of fourteen towns to form the new St Louis County when it was organized into county government by an act of the state legislature. At that time it had a population of 3647 residents and included parts of what are now Ferguson and St Louis counties as well as all or part of three other counties: Clay (northwest corner), Stone (east corner), and Callaway (southwest corner). In 1907-08 a group of businessmen from central Missouri formed an organization called "The Cotton Ginners' Club" with the goal of promoting cotton farming throughout central Missouri through marketing efforts and education opportunities for farmers themselves as well as for others who would invest in their success. The club's first meeting was held on October 10th, 1907 at which time they adopted their present name - The American Farm Bureau Federation - based upon their intent to promote agricultural interests throughout America on a national level while working together with local organizations such as those existing within each individual state capital city or major metropolis). From its inception until its dissolution more than fifty years later AFBF played an important role both locally and nationally by sponsoring numerous educational programsincluding lectures by visiting scientists; providing financial assistance to farmers during tough times; sponsoring agricultural exhibitions around America; and working directly with local governments to help improve conditions on farms throughout America's rural areas.-Brady Jarrell
