Bridgeton, Missouri is a small town located in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 536 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Bridgeton was Captain James Cook on his ill-fated voyage of Discovery in 1768. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson and his men camped for the winter near the village. In 1812, General Van Buren built a road through the community and named it after President James K. Polk. In 1857, Bridgeton's post office was established with Aiken as its first Postmaster. At the time there were only two stores in town and no other business activity aside from farming and ranching which continued until after World War II when oil production began to increase in nearbys towns such as Anadarko and Parker County. At some point between 1922-1924 a new high school was built in town which became known as "Old Main" later renamed "Bridgeton High School". It burned down in 1978 but has been rebuilt several times since then including most recently in 2006 when it reopened as part of a $27 million renovation project funded by an addition of tax dollars to the local general fund (the largest ever made to that effect within Bridgeton).
