Bridgeton, Missouri is a small town located in St. Francois County, Missouri within the Ozarks region of the Midwestern United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Springfield–Bridgeton, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was laid out in 1837 by Captain John Fenton as Cedar Bluff on what is now Bridgeton Road. It was named after Sir James BridgetON (1672-1746), an English statesman who served as Secretary to Prince George of Great Britain and Ambassador to France. The town slogan is "Equal parts home, business and tourist destination." Bridgeton's history begins with General Robert Ewell's invasion of Mexico in 1847 and his march through Missouri into Kansas Territory. Mexican troops burned down several towns along the way before reaching Bridgeton just beyond its present bounds. A post office was established at Bridgeton in 1848, but service was discontinued due to difficulties with Native Americans living near the post office and with bandits operating from nearby mountain strongholds. In 1861, Confederate General Bowen Loftus attacked Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant at Forks ofthe River during the American Civil War; many deaths resulted from this battle including that of Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest sympathizing with the Confederacy. Afterward, many Unionists fled to Bridgeton where they ran a school for African Americans which continues today as Booker T Washington Elementary School (opened fall 2002). In 1865, after Confederate forces were defeated at Gettysburg two months later, Union soldiers burning down some homes found munitions stored inside one house; this event led to charges against local residents for treason against the United States government which were eventually dropped due to lack evidence. After Reconstruction took place in America following slavery's abolition in 1865, many white Southerners returned to their former homes while black northerners moved into areas such as Bridgeton which had become integrated by then into society overall. This period also saw heavy industry take hold with mills opening up around town beginning production of flour (a key product produced here), oil shale mining begun near present day Brushy Bottom Lake (a source for fuel for locomotives) and other manufacturing products being developed here like soapstone quarries that yielded high quality blocks used for building construction throughout America during this time period.$ Manufacturing has continued since then employing large numbers people hereabouts across various fields such as agriculture ($183 million output last year), healthcare ($5 billion spent on health care services internationally) and machine tool production ($4 billion). Bridgeton, Missouri, is a town in Clarion County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,405 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clarion County. The first permanent settlers in Bridgeton were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1837. They named their community after General James Bridgeton and his brigade of United States Volunteers during the Mexican-American War. The town was platted in 1841, and began to grow rapidly due to coal mining and agriculture. In 1845, the railroad arrived in town and allowed for more trade and commerce to develop. By 1870, Bridgeton had a population of 2,500 residents and was one of the most populous towns on the west side of Missouri River. During World War II, many residents worked at military sites across central Missouri such as Camp McGrath near Springfield (now Arlington Heights), Kansas City Arsenal (now Quantico Marine Corps Base), Camp Beauregard near Memphis (now FedExField), or other war-related locations throughout central Missouri. In 2002, parts of Bridgeton were destroyed by fire when a 5 million candlepower light show being aired at an amusement park caused too much heat from an open flame inside a building adjacent to the park's entrance. No injuries were reported but 150 mph winds knocked out power to much of downtownBridgeton for several hours that day
