Bridgeton, Missouri is a small town in Clay County, Missouri. The population was 1,445 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Bridgeton was made by farmers on the east bank of the River Des Peres about 1858. A post office called "Bridgeton" was established in 1866, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. As early as 1868, local residents had started to build cotton plantations along the river north of town. By 1870-71, there were over seventy slaves working on these plantations. In 1872-73 a group of men from nearby Independence built a bridge across the River Des Peres which connected their plantations with Bridgeton. This Bridge became known as "the Golden Spike". At various points during its history, Bridgeton had several school districts: one located near downtown; another located northeast of town; and another northwest of town. In 1928-29 the old Central School District merged with two other districts to form new Central School District No.: 2 which included much of northwestern Clay County including modern day Bridgeton
