The first settler in Bridgeton was John Crouse in 1836. He and his family were the only people living there when it was founded. The first school was built in 1839 and the first post office opened in 1840. In 1854, Bridgeton had a church and two stores. By 1880, there were eleven buildings and a population of 350 residents. In 1920, the BRG railroad came to town and started to build track through it; by 1930, the track had been finished all the way to Bradyville Junction. At that point, BRG stopped building tracks through town and abandoned it altogether; by 1990, all traces of BRG have disappeared from Bridgeton memory. Bridgeton has seen some major changes since its founding: In 1924-25, an airplane hangar replaced the old schoolhouse as municipal headquarters; also during that time period (1924-25), local businesses erected a new public library which still stands today across from Village Hall (the original structure) on Main Street; however most notable about this time period is that Bridgeton's only grocery store closed down due to economic reasons around 1939 - 1940 after years of being one of the largest grocery stores in town... finally closing its doors forever less than 2 years ago! It seems like anything can happen within such a short amount of time these days... but back then? That just wasn't possible!

The town was renamed for American Brigadier General Samuel Bridgeton (1794-1864), who had fought in the Mexican War and later served as commander of troops stationed in Iowa Territory during the Indian Wars. In 1870, Bridgeton established its own school district which included much of Harvey County. The main street in town still bears his name - Samuel Dickinson Boulevard - although other streets have since been renamed to more recent namesakes such as Main Street (1948), Ford Road (1970), and First Street (1996). In 1936, local farmer Hedda White donated land to be built up into a small city with a planned economy that would be accessible only by car or bus; this city never materialized but many of the original buildings still stand today including the post office and courthouse which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The town experienced another growth spurt from the late 1800s until around 1910 when it reached its peak with over 1,500 residents. From 1910-1920, however, the population decreased as many Bridgeton residents moved away for various reasons such as job opportunities in larger cities or because their families became too large for their individual homes. In 1920-1930, there were only 100 residents living inBridgeton while during World War II it grew up to 2,000 people due to an influx of soldiers coming home from combat roles in Europe. However, after World War II ended and many jobs were lost due to automation and globalization; the population started to shrink again until it reached its current size of around 500 people today throughOUT OF BUSINESS ZONES ACCEPTED BY THE CITY OF BRIDON
