Bridgeton, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. François County and part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Bridgeton were French colonists who arrived circa 1762. They named their new community after Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, sister to King George III of Great Britain and Queen Caroline of France. The original village site was two miles (3 km) east of present-day Bridgeton on the banks of the Arkansas River and near what is now McGee Road. A post office called "Bridgeton" was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1872." In 1867, James Chaney founded a baseball team known as the "Chaney Coal Miners" and began playing at an old farmhouse on McGee Road which he had bought from John Hancey Sr.. The team played its first game against Racine Indians on Halloween night; they won 5-2. In 1870, Chaney sold his team to Jno Clements and continued play as "Clement's Colts". In 1875, Elijah Boudreaux platted this township on land that he had obtained from Nicholas deeded to him by Pierre Laclotte de la Salle under the Louisiana Purchase program for $10 per acre (4 hectares). Many early inhabitants - including David Baird - came from rural southeastern Kentucky via wagon train bound for Kansas City where they worked localtilting lands or mined coal seams aroundKansas City during this period (). Baird's millrace measured some 3 miles wide (), but according to historian Loyd Sargent only ran about 2 miles due to flooding caused by heavy rains in 1862/63; however neighboring towns took advantage of Baird's Lossesville mine shaft which still exists today ().
