The Bridgiton post office was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it closed on February 14, 1974. The town was named for Bridgeton Township in Blair County, Michigan. Bridgeton's first settler was John Ingersoll who arrived there in 1835. He platted what would become Bridgiton Township on May 6, 1836. He also erected the first building in Bridgiton which still stands today - a two story log cabin that served as the towns store from 1836 to 1840. In 1850 John Prentice built a four-story stone structure which became the courthouse and jail for Bridgiton and continued to be used until 1954 when it burned down. In 1861 Jesse Denton moved to Bridgiton from Independence and began raising corn and pigs there until 1865 when he sold his interest to Jethro Cramer who donated land to make sure that any windmills built were sited so they could generate power for Bridgaton residents instead of exporting their electricity toKansas City during those days before Edison invented alternating current (AC).
