Bridgeton, Missouri is a town in Shawnee County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1837 by John Bridgeton and James Hickey and named for his daughter-in-law, Bessie Hickey (1814-1881). The first post office opened in 1839. In 1840, the town had just over 100 residents and was known as "the little village." A sawmill became operational in 1846 and the town grew rapidly; by 1850 it had a population of 2200. By 1860, the population had increased to 4000 and by 1870 it numbered 7000. In 1887, natural gas was discovered near Bridgeton and development began immediately; within 10 years there were over 50 businesses operating in the town center including a brewery (1889), an insurance company (1902), a telephone company (1910), an elevator manufacturer (1911), a store chain (1917) and several automobile dealerships. The townspeople built their own schools from scratch in 1903–04 when funding for public education became available through state legislation following passage of the Interstate Commerce Act. Bridgeton's growth continued into the 20th century as housing developments developed along Route 66 around milepost 198; these areas added another 5000 residents to Bridgeton during this time frame although much of that growth took place outside of downtown which continued to be its commercial heart until after World War II when construction began on what would become known as "The City". During Prohibition period many businesses closed but many others survived because they were able to find other customers who could not purchase alcohol without getting caught or owning property subject to federal law prohibiting such operations In 1949 local officials approved plans for what would become one of America's largest shopping malls with anchor stores like Sears & Roebuck as well as department stores like JCPenney & Montgomery Ward among others This mall would continue to grow until finally being razed in 1995 due largely to budget cuts brought about by then Mayor Jerry Wehner who cited complaints from shoppers about high energy prices being reflected in pricing at some anchor locations
