Since the early 1800s, the town has been home to many gunsmiths and dealers who have helped make Bridgeton one of the most firearm-friendly cities in Missouri. In addition to its longstanding tradition of firearms ownership, Bridgeton also has a rich history with clothing. Bridgeton was founded in 1837 by John Sennett and his wife Sarah. At first, the town was a small farming community located north of Sligo on the Illinois River. However, during the 1840s, brgyetons growth spurt as a lumber and mining center due to its location near two major natural resources: coal and silver. After years of expansion, Bridgeton reached its current size in 1865 when it joined The City of St. Louis as an incorporated city. In 2007,Bridgeton became part of The Gateway City School District which included over 3300 students from 36 townships across central Missouri including St.. Francoisville (St., Louis), Florissant ( Florissant Hills), Hazel Grove (Hazelwood), Crystal Lake (Crystal Lake Heights), Libertyville (Libertyville Heights), rural Irontown (Irontown Hills), White Oak Ridge (White Oak Ridge Township) and others. As part of this districtwide effort to promote student engagement in their local communities through extracurricular activities such as sports teams and service projects, all elementary schools within The Gateway City School District are now equipped with rifles for school shooting events where appropriate attire is required by law

When Bridgeton, Missouri was founded in 1836, the town's first settlers were farmers. Over time, the town developed into a small ranching community with an economy based on agriculture and cattle. Firearms became important tools for these residents, as firearms were needed to protect their property from other residents and animals. The first handgun in Bridgeton was a revolver that was made by George W. Smith and purchased by John White in 1847. This revolver is still being used today. The early handguns were not very accurate, so they were not used much. However, as time passed and more people started to own handguns, the accuracy of these guns increased. In 1865, J.H. Biddle bought a gun shop in Bridgeton and began to make pistols and rifles there. At this time, handguns began becoming more popular than rifles because they could be shot quickly without having to reload often. This change made pistols more desirable among citizens of Bridgeton and neighboring towns such as Phelpsville and Galesburg (which are now part of Springfield). In 1875-1876, James Hogg opened his grocery store in centralBridgeton which became one of the largest grocery stores west of the Mississippi River at that time(it is still open). His store sold guns along with other items like groceries and candy bars(he also ran a pistol range out back). In 1901-1902Fletcher Norvell builtNorvell's Hardware Store which became one of the most popular hardware stores east of the Mississippi River at that time(it is still open). In 1912-1913Dallas Wilcox built Wilcox's Drugstore which became one of the most popular drugstores east of the Mississippi River at that time(it is still open). These stores continued to sell firearms until 1976 when Walthers closed its doors in downtownBridgeton.(It currently stands vacant)

The original name for Bridgeton was "Fenton." In 1912, a post office was established here and the name changed to "Bridgeton" because of its location on US-67 between Topeka and Kansas City. In 1951, Bridgeton merged with Hutchinson to form a single city. The merger resulted in the creation of a new police department as well as other changes to local government. Today, Bridgeton is an important commercial center for central Kansas and has been called "the Gateway to Wichita."

The town was named after Brigitte Bourgeois, the daughter of an early settler. There has been no move back to Ferguson since then (although some residents do commute to downtown St. Louis). Bridgeton's economy has always been based on agriculture: most of its citizens are employed within farming or ranching industries; however, other businesses have also turned up over time including several light manufacturing plants as well as three medical clinics and one dental office which rely heavily on services provided by health care professionals from out-of-town suburbs located only minutes away by car or train .
