At first they set up camp near present day Springfield, Missouri until they found a suitable location for their new settlement on the bank of the Iowa River. In 1838, Captain John Youngs and his men built a ferry across the river which allowed them to trade goods with surrounding counties. By 1840, there were twenty-eight families living in Bridgeton and five businesses were operating: one timber business, two clothing stores, one grocery store, one sawmill andone boatyard. In 1846 Captain John Youngs sold his interest in the ferry business to James Hickey who operated it until 1951 when it was acquired by Joplin Municipal Utilities Company which continues to operate it today as an attraction for tourists alike. The first school structure in Bridgeton was built in 1839 by Mrs.(pronounced "Bridget") Smith who donated land for a school district that included present day Springfield Township and other parts of southern St Louis County including Farmington Hills and Hazelwood which are now part of Kansas City suburb Topeka; these settlements had been established by early Methodists who sailed downriver from Great Britain during that era seeking religious asylum among American Indians (the Potawatomi). The first school building was constructed on what is now First Street just north of Railroad Avenue in Springfield Township where many future mayors – Mayor Francis Slay (D), Mayor Harold Ickes (D) – served before moving on to high office within city limits after serving several terms as mayor or recorder for St Louis County starting with Harry Sargeant (31st Precinct) before he became director general field services for all public works under Director General Amos Burbank (St Joseph’s Hospital). This structure served as a means for parents educational opportunities not available through private schools so that their children could receive an education while still residing within Presbyterian missionary parishes adjacent to their homes “just beyond” home schooling practices possible only through denominational private schools operators such as Presbyterians United Reformed Church trustees Barbara Robinson-Lambright(northwest corner lot), Mrs.(pronounced "Bridget") Acheson(southwest corner lot), Rev.(pronounced "Rev.")
