Bolivar, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Bolivar was founded in 1881 by Manuel Antonio Gomez and his brother-in-law José de la Cruz as a small Christian settlement on a bend in the Platte River. The name comes from Francisco José de Bolívar, an independence fighter who played an important role in Venezuelan history and who is also considered to be one of Americas most celebrated patriots. The first store in Bolivar was built by Mr. Gomez in 1881. After years of hard work and determination, he eventually became prosperous running a general store and post office here for many years until it closed its doors in 1915 when World War I destroyed much of Europe's market for goods imported into America. With few other options open to him, Mr .Gomez decided to move his store and business to Pittsfield, Kansas where he continued to operate his businesses until his death in 1951. In 1927, Mrs .José de la Cruz donated land near present day Bolivar Boulevard for the purpose of founding a school district which would serve the community well with good schools that could provide opportunities for children from all socio-economic backgrounds including those living below poverty lines. In 1935 Mrs .Cruz again offered her donation which led to the construction of what is now known as Bolivar High School which opened its doors that same year!
