Bolivar is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. Bolivar is part of the Springfield-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the banks of the Verdigris River and just northeast ofSpringfield. The town traces its roots back to 1820 when seven families from Santa Fe immigrated to Missouri as part of the Vieques Expedition. They named their new home "Bolivar" after Simón Bolívar, one of independence Mexico's leading thinkers and generals during its early years. The first post office in Bolivar was established in 1827; it remained in operation until 1884. In 1882, a gristmill was erected and soon became a major factor in bolivarian life because it produced flour for local grocery stores and also served as a power source for village homes and churches. By 1913, Bolivar had two newspapers - The Republican and The Herald - both published by locals under the name "The Town Paper." A railroad station was built in 1915 adjacent to the mill which led to increased trade with Springfield and other nearby towns. In 1922, Bolivars first high school graduated seniors; that year they opened up shoplifting services out of school hours so that students could afford college tuition instead of having to work full time jobs like many others in those days. That same year saw the opening of a branch library far away from most households due to lack of funds but ultimately helped increase literacy rates among young people throughout Jackson County thanks largely to librarians like Mrs. Clara Savidis who worked tirelessly day and night over many years taking advantage of donated books that were coming off shelves at local bookstores around town! In 1951, Bolivars first synagogue opened Doors Open House celebrations coincided with Israel's Independence Day; within five years there were six synagogues open across all Jackson Counties! Today there are more than 30 synagogues operating withinJackson County alone! A large numberof businesses have been established along Main Street such as Banksy's Gourmet Grocery (now closed), Ford's Department Store (closed), Walmart Supercenter (opened) & Payless Shoes (closed).
