Bolivar is a small town in Bollinger County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. Bolivar was named for Andres Manuel de Bolívar, who fought in the Spanish-American War and who later served as president of Bolivia from 1825 to 1830. Bolivar was platted in 1836 by General John C. Frémont and named after Bolívar. A post office had been established at Bolivar in 1837, but no mail arrived until 1850. In 1852, a new schoolhouse was built and named for Revaillón Páez de la Vega y Orozco, the first female teacher in Missouri. The town first received electricity in 1904 and its own water system in 1913. The Stonington Manufacturing Company operated a flour mill here from 1886 to 1922; it also manufactured automobiles beginning in 1907 by Ford Motor Company's Stonington plant outside of Stonington, Connecticut. Many residents were born or brought up here; many still live there today (2006).

Bolivar is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. Bolivar was founded in 1836 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. It became an incorporated community in 1902. Bolivar is located on the west bank of the Missouri River just upstream from Jefferson City, the county seat. The first settler in Bolivar was James Hickey who arrived in 1836 and homesteaded on land that would later become Bolivar Township. In 1838, John Fenton settled adjacent to Hickey's farm and also started a log cabin near present-day Bolivar Elementary School. Daniel Boone came through central Missouri during the 1840s and his wagon train stopped at Hickey's house before continuing on to Kansas City where he purchased land east of what is now Overland Park, Kansas for $5 per acre ($100 total). By 1850, most of present-day BolivAR had been established when Elijah Maynard arrived with his family from Kentucky via pirogue and rafting across the river to claim land along its banks oppositeriver mouth on July 10th (the date Arkansas statehood occurred). The Maynards named their new home "Bolivia" after their native country Venezuela (then part of Spanish America). In 1851, Maynard sold his holdings to John Fenton Jr., who continued to use them as pasturelands until 1860 when he built a mill dam across the stream which provided power for irrigation systems used by farmers throughout northwestern Missouri. In 1862 Maynard married Nancy Aiken and moved from Bolivia to live nearer her parents; they raised six children there before moving back east in 1868 when Maynard became governor of Missouri under Ulysses S Grant’s presidency." Governor Harry Emerson Smith ordered all federal troops out of Indian Territory by September 30th 1861 because “peaceable settlement could not be made without undermining our whole system carried into effect by these troops” due to “the great insurrection among our Indians” northwest of St Louis County including “the settlements at Blue Springs [in Buchanan County] and Galesburg [in Ottawa County], both within this State” which were providing food storage and shelter for insurgents against Ulysses S Grant's orders south of Springfield MO.. On October 3rd 1861 Smith ordered General McCulloch relieve General Doniphan commanding eastern Illinois Brigade District #6 along Galena Road northward toward Hannibal MO because McCulloch felt pressure from pro-Grant elements around that area having learned about sympathies among some members of local militia forces towards southern secessionists active in central Illinois... For unknown reasons General McCulloch did not relieve General Doniphan until November 5th 1861 resulting in over 20K military casualties including 7 Officers & 120 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded while trying unsuccessfully to retake HannibalMO." On December 14th 1861 Confederate Major General Braxton Bragg march through Independence Grove Cemetery south side streets entrance lot surrounded by Union artillery batteries skirmishing with Federal cavalry outside boundaries lines owned by Confederate Major General David Hunter....Bragg entered town limits northeast side streets entrance lot pursued Union cavalry inside cemetery boundaries past marker for Captain Israel Hickson who fell fighting within minutes following engagement 8 miles southeast corner Bunker Hill Rd W Slaughter Valley Rd 4 miles NW Springdale Rd 6 miles NE Havana Rd 9 miles SE Carthage
