In 1902, Bolivar had a post office and saw its first fire Department service. The town experienced heavy economic decline during the Great Depression of the 1930s but has since bounced back and regained its former prosperity thanks to two key factors: an increase in mining and manufacturing activity which has led to a growth in jobs both inside and outside of Bolivar; as well as the presence of several colleges and universities which have drawn millions of students from throughout Missouri and beyond. Today, Bolivar is one of the most vibrant communities in Greene County with many opportunities for socializing, dining out, shopping and professional activities including arts & crafts shows, rodeos and golf tournaments.
Bolivar began as a small farming community in 1836. By 1860, the town had a population of 100 residents and was growing rapidly. In 1871, Bolivar became the county Seat of Cass County. The following year, Bolivar voters approved a new city charter which allowed for the construction of a city hall and other municipal buildings. The city continued to grow rapidly until it had a population of over 1,500 residents by 1910. In 1912, Bolivar voters passed an ordinance establishing public education in the town. This started the growth of Bolivar into one of the largest towns in Missouri.
