Bolivar is a town in Douglas County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Bolivar is part of the Springfield-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in present-day Bolivar was George Thornton who arrived in 1837. He built a cabin on the same spot where the current building stands and named it after his Venezuelan friend, Martin Bolívar. In 1839, James Henshaw settled here and raised corn. A post office was established here in 1840, and remained in operation until 1907. A hardware store and restaurant were built here in 1906 by Addison Henson. In 1905 The Gadsden Times reported that "the people of Bolivar are getting restless about their lack of education." This complaint led to passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act which granted statehood to Nebraska and thus ended the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which had kept Kansas untied from Texas while also giving Missouri representation in Congress. This act caused much anger among eastern farmers who saw their land taken away while they received little or no compensation; this resentment helped spark the Mexican American War (1846-48) which resulted in Mexico achieving independence from Spain and becoming an autonomous republic called Mexico City with its own government and laws rather than under Ulysses S Grant’s Americanized Confederation as it had been under Spanish rule since 1795 BC when Cortés founded San Miguel de Allende on what is now downtown Austin, Texas.– By 1850 there were over 12,000 residents living near Austin but only 350 residents lived within 6 miles (10 km) of Bolivar proper.– At this time there were two churches located here: First Baptist Church (founded 1854) affiliated with Scots Presbyterianism then later Southern Baptist Convention; Second Presbyterian Church (1867), affiliated with Methodist Episcopal Church USA.–A post office operated at Bolivar for 31 years before being discontinued due to consolidation of postal service across Douglas County during World War II.–When Highway 63 was relocated eastward along US Highway 362 acrossfromwhere it currently ends just west of Springfield Boulevard on November 25th 1961 all businesses within 2 blocks southof where hewalls abutted uponnow defunct Oklahoma Road 191 closed because they didnt have permits to build newwindows or any other kind of structure on those properties.– After that day most buildings within 2 blocks northofthatwallwere left unoccupiedand used as storage by local farmers until recently when they decided to start permanent repairsand additions thereto following Hurricane Katrina damage
