Bolivar, Missouri is a small town in Bolling County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Carroll County Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bolivar is located on State Route 66 about 12 miles (19 km) north of Springfield and 24 miles (37 km) south of Carrollton. The first settler in Bolivar was Levi Ackerman in 1836. Ackerman built a log cabin near present-day Bolivar on the banks of the Elk River. He also raised cattle and hogs for local market. In 1842, John Averill moved to Bolivar from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and began to plant corn and wheat in what is now Bolivar Township. By 1849, Averill had built a gristmill which still stands today within the community limits; he later became proprietor of the millhands' storeroom adjoining his mill complex. In 1854, James Hutton arrived from Virginia with his family and set up shop as a farmer around mile post 5 on U.S. Route 66 between Springfield and Carrollton; he remains buried there to this day under farm equipment that once surrounded his unmarked grave! Hutton's land lay just east of present-day Bolivar along what would become State Route 66 until it was widened for Interstate 44 traffic in the late 1960s! By 1860, two years after Hutton's arrival in Bolling County, there were ten homes in BolivAR with one male resident working all year round on three farms: David Wessels ran a sawmill while wife Anna managed domestic tasks such as caring for five children each; Daniel Bechtel operated an ice cream parlor across from USR 65 four miles east of town; Emanuel Kappfisch farmed some 160 acres (72 ha) northeast of town along CR 506/Route 66 before selling off most or all holdings during prohibition years 1908-1911 parallel to I-44.; Solomon Schieffer opened an independent grocery store on Main Street opposite USR 65 about eight miles northeast of town by 1927.; Harry Dopey ran a dry goods store adjacent to USR 605 six miles northwest of town beginning about 1915.; Jens Christensen operated another grocery store at intersection SR 620/U .S . Rte 660 two miles southeastof original village site starting about 1920.; Georgette Naylor started buying eggs from farmers west side URBAN RD early 1930s when prices were high enough to make egg purchase worth doing.– Today little evidence remains aboveground except foundationserestablished circa 1945 near intersectionSR 620/U .S .
