Bolivar is located on the Verdigris River and borders Arkansas to the east and Illinois to the south-southwest. The first recorded settlement in present-day Bolivar was made by French colonists in 1764 as "New Orleans." In 1812, under Mexican rule, Bolivar became part of Texas before it became a U.S. state in 1845. When Kansas Territory was organized in 1861, Bolivar became its capital; it remained so until 1907 when Kansas City moved its seat to Topeka. In 1865–1866, General James Swayne's Brigade performed an epic march from Waterloo to Independence against Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest's forces near present-day Carthage,. On October 16th of that year General Swayne's brigade reached Alma Springs after days' travel through rugged terrain and bad weather (). There they relieved General Avery Price's division (), which had been cut off from reinforcement by Forrest's main force at Carthage Court House (). After routing Forrest's remaining forces north of Carthage Court House (),General Swayne ordered his brigade into camp for the night (). On October 19th general Swayne discovered that he had been outflanked: his right flank was exposed by two miles (3 km) of low ridge running parallel to his line of march and open country beyond (); this exposed ground served as an ideal ambush site for Confederate cavalry () commanded by Colonel John Ferguson (). The next day general Swayne determined to rejoin his army before it could be surrounded or destroyed: he ordered his infantry divisions () forward into position on high ground just behind where he now saw what appeared to be overwhelming numbers of Confederate cavalryman () approximately 3 miles (5 km) distant (), with orders not to fire unless they were fired on first). Lieutenant Colonel Ransom led one detachment () across open country onto these hills (), whence they began lobbing grape shot over the fence towards those approaching from behind (). This unauthorized firing created a large hole in their rear guard which allowed Confederate cavalrymen free rein within minutes; soon all but one detachment () had fallen victim to this devastating attack (. . .)
