In 1873, Bolivar was founded by J.D. White and James A. Hardesty as a small town in Hancock County, Missouri. The company became one of the leading manufacturers of ammunition and firearms in the United States during the 19th century. Ammunition production began with saltpeter cannons used by the Mexican army to bombard fortifications along the US-Mexico border during the War of 1846-1848. The first shot fired from a cannon in Bolivar was on July 2nd, 1872, when two guns were emplaced at Fort Donelson to salute General Zachary Taylor's arrival in town for his inspection tour of military forces in Missouri. At that time, artillery fire was limited to ranges less than 10 miles due to powder shortages caused by warring factions within Mexico and America. In 1892, Winchester Manufacturing Company opened a factory in Bolivar and continued production of ammunition there until 1961 when it closed its doors permanently because of technological advancements that made reloading faster and easier than ever before. Bolivar, Missouri has a rich ammunition history dating back to the early 1800s. One of the first companies in Bolivar was Gaspard's Ammunition Company, which operated from 1802-1824. In 1825, Daniel Boone and his party discovered what would become the town of Bolivar, Missouri. The town was named for General Bernardo de Santa Anna, who had fought in Mexican independence against Spanish rule. Santa Anna's forces founded the first school in Bolivar in 1827. By 1830, Gaspard's Ammunition Company had replaced Santa Anna as the town's main business sponsor. Over time, other businesses followed suit and Bolivar became one of the most important military communities in Missouri.

It is located on the Western Slope of Missouri, between Jefferson City and Cape Girardeau. There are also several schools in Bolivar including Lamar High School which serves students from grades 9-12; Central Christian Academy which teaches Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade; Carondelet Intermediate School which serves students fromgrades 1-4; and West Plains Community School which offers pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. The community enjoys many social activities including country music festivals each summertime as well as art shows throughout the year by local artists who showcase their work in front of local galleries in town square during winter months. In addition to its cultural attractions, Bolivar has become an important stop for motorists travelling along I-435 due to its excellent access to gas stations nearby as well as good shopping opportunities available at nearby malls.

Bolivar is a city in and the county seat of Bolivar County, Missouri, United States. The population was 23,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first European settlers to visit what is now Bolivar County were French fur traders in the early 18th century. A post office was established in 1793, but no one came to live there until 1813 when General James K. Polk arrived with his army and discovered rich gold mines in present-day Colorado River Valley. Polk offered $10 per acre for land east of the river, which he named Polkville after him. In November 1819, General John Custer led his Seventh Cavalry into what is now Bolivar County during the Washita Expedition and found rich land west of Kansas City that he named Fort Scott after General Scott's headquarters at nearby Topeka (now Shawnee) Territory Headquarters. In 1820, Isaac Asa Gray founded a town on Clear Creek near present-day Springfield and called it Graytown because gray granite was quarried there. However, this settlement failed because few people wanted to come to an unknown location and it soon vanished from history books as Prairie Village developed on its site instead. In 1830, Joel Barlow erected a log cabin about four miles south of today's town square on what later became known as Old Oaken Bucket Hill (later known as Independence Hills). Today's town square was laid out in 1836 by Judge Augustus McCoy when he surveyed the area between Independence Hills and Clear Creek where Bolivar now stands just north of Interstate 70 exit 213A/B on I-70 northbound/southbound lanes; access is available from Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard east of town square across from Parkview Mall parking lot off I-70 exit 214A onto parkway built by MO Dept of Transportation following development patterns seen around Independence Hills during this time period which included homesites back then with businesses clustered around courthouse plaza . On 5 May 1865 Union forces burned all buildings within 100 yards or so of Fort Scott including barbershops etc., destroying most historic records connected with that place including those compiled by Judge Augustus McCoy before his death some 20 years earlier
