In 1849, the legislature created a township within Blue Springs Township and named it for Major General George Washington Dix (1778-1848). Dix had played an important role in Indian Wars throughout much of North America and his death helped spur development in the area. In 1865, Confederate forces burned down what was then Blacksmith Shop No 1 on Main Street in Blue Springs during their retreat from Union forces near Cairo, Missouri following the Battle of Wilson's Creek. In 1906, Blue Springs became part of Franklin County when it was organized from parts of Ozark and White County. At that time there were only three other towns within Franklin County: Poplar Bluff (founded in 1830), Springfield (founded cincinnati) and Jefferson City (founded 1886). Incorporation into Franklin County caused some growth but also resulted in reduced land values due to less accessibility to markets outside of Franklin County for rural residents keen on acquiring homespun farmsteads with extensive views across rolling countryside including those located inside Franklin County limits where prices could be much higher than those available elsewhere outside of Franklin County limits
