It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Hills, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Blue Springs was first settled by English colonists in the late 17th century. In 1836, it became part of Kansas and then Missouri before becoming a town in Jackson County, Missouri. Blue Springs had its start as a small agricultural community with about 25 residents in 1885. The town grew rapidly after World War I when the military moved into the area to secure munitions supplies for Allied forces fighting on various fronts around the world. At its peak in 1920, Blue Springs had over 200 residents and a school system that included four schools and one high school. However, during World War II the town exploded with growth due to demand for munitions production from both America and Europe. By 1945, Blue Springs had reached 1,000 residents and boasted an economy based largely on agriculture and local manufacturing products such as wagon wheels made from lead shot or brass plated nails. Polk as a small trading post on the Blue River, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of St. Louis. The first white settler in Blue Springs was Captain John Aiken, who arrived in 1836 and built an adobe cabin near what is now the town's courthouse square. Aiken's settlement soon attracted other pioneers, including David Sibley and his brother-in-law Aaron Burr Smith, both Mormons who had come to Kansas Territory to proselytize among the Native American tribes there. In 1840, when St. Louis became an independent city under the jurisdiction of a new state government, Blue Springs became its second city and continued to serve as a center for trade and transportation within Missouri until it was destroyed by fire in 1868. The town reemerged as an important commercial center during Reconstruction following the Civil War; it experienced rapid growth after that time but declined after federal troops withdrew from Missouri in 1865. Internal politicseventually led to its destruction by Union forces in 1870 during the Battle of Blue Springs over control of local resources such as cotton fields and water supplies – one of several strategic engagements leading up to Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House two months later. Today, only scattered remnants of buildings from predecessor settlements remain around what once were bustling downtown streets; most telltale signs that life went on normally are unmarked graves or piles of rubble leftovers from earlier building projects.)
