The population of Blue Springs increased rapidly after World War II due to the increase in bluecollar jobs throughout the area as mills closed down and workers moved into new subdivisions that provided access to handguns for self-defense purposes only if they had permits from their neighborhood police officers or landlords (who often did not issue such permits). In 1954, the village became the City ofBlue Springs when it merged with neighboring towns Whitehall and Springdale. In 1976, Blue Springs became an official city after being approved by voters via referendum
