Blue Springs, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 7,545 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Blue Springs County and the county seat of Blue Springs. The first permanent settler in what would become Blue Springs was James Wilkinson in 1821. By 1826, Wilkinson had two stores and 10 slaves working for him. He also erected a sawmill on the Arkansas River which he named "The Falls". In 1827, Wilkinson married Martha Aiken and they began to live on their farmstead. Two years later, they bought an additional plot of land and erected a log cabin which became their home until death did them part in 1865. The town plat was submitted to the state of Missouri on January 2, 1868, but no action was taken until November 2 that year when it was accepted as a village by the state board of commissioners. A post office called Blue Springs was established in 1875; it closed operations in 1905. The name blue springs comes from early settler John Dickson's recollections of seeing “a beautiful deep blue spring” while surveying his land around this location during his days as a scout for General George Armstrong Custer's army during the Indian Wars (1865-1867). The first store opened near present day Municipal Drive and South Main Street just west of Highway 24 about 1886 when Jno Gorman opened up shop with two barrels per week worth of goods drawn by four horses teaming across country from Columbia City eastward to Springfield followed by four days ride back north to Mr Gorman's store at Alexandria Landing where passengers took aboard steamboats sent downriver bound for Independence or St Louis arriving May 1st or 2nd each year according to local news reports then being forwarded eastward thence via stagecoach or Pony Express wagon trains arriving at Springfield Landing late on Saturday night before shipping out Sunday morning loaded with produce crates full of flour beans etc.. Today there are three buildings still standing including Mrs Gorman’s house built about 1912 on lot donated by her husband after she passed away; First Baptist Church built 1935 using funds raised through public subscription inside old original building next door destroyed by fire 1968; Third Street Baptist Church built 1961 using funds raised through sales/donation drive
