Belton was platted in 1868 by John J. Belton and named for his brother-in-law Cornelius Benton, who had moved to Missouri from Kentucky the previous year. Belton had its start as a Methodist church located on the east side of town, near present day Montrose Boulevard and Olive Road. A school was built in 1869 and called "The Ladies' School." In 1870, a post office was established at Belton and it continued operation until 1907. Belton's first settler were Isaac Henson and his family who arrived from Illinois in 1856. They erected a log cabin on the north side of town about midway between Main Street and Olive Road. Mr. Henson served as justice of peace for St Francois County from 1860 to 1862; he also operated an Emigrant Aid Society store which helped immigrants arrive in Missouri during that time period In 1867, James Fenton purchased two lots along Main Street from David Mowery for $250 cash plus 5 acres (2 ha) of land for $10 per acre to build a gristmill which he renamed "Fenton's Mill". Another early business owner was Elijah Capps who operated a general store across the street from Fenton's Mill until 1870 when he sold his business to Wm Gentry after he became involved with nearby Bellefontaine Mines In 1871, Lizzie Keyes arrived with her family from Massachusetts and they erected a white house on west side of town opposite Mrs Keyes' parents home . Lizzie Keyes later married William Tipton who lived adjacent to her home also until his death in 1916 A post office called "Henderson" was established at Belton in September 1870 by Wm Dickson with instructions to serve both Hendersonville (present day Lebanon) and Bellefontaine Mines . Henderson received its first mail shipment on October 15th , 1870 The first train stop serving Belton came about this time when tracks were laid down through what is now occupied by KFC restaurant location on Main Street . The original locomotive used for these stops was No 271 which hauled coal upriver from Belleville Mine before being converted into an engine used by Union Pacific Railroad mainline service between Kansas City and Omaha In 1872widow Anna Driscoll donated twenty acres (8 ha) including three homes east of town near where KFC restaurant is now located to become Academy Park Cemetery - one of only four cemeteries within St Francois County authorized by law ; it remains open today as one of our many community resources center providing information about local history while promoting education opportunities within our community
