Belton is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield metropolitan area. The first settler in Belton was James J. McNaught who arrived on July 12, 1839. He and his family were the first to reside in what would later be Belton Township (now known as Polk Township). McNaught named his township after himself, which may be why it is also called "Belton." In 1854, the townsite of BelTON was platted by John Aiken and Wm. Henson Jr., two of the original settlers in Belton Township. Development began around this time withthe construction of a post office and store at what is now First Street and Third Avenue S., which opened in November 1855. A Methodist church was built on Main Street just east of Third Avenue S., also opening in November 1855. In 1865, ownership of the post office passed from Aiken to Henson's son Robert Blease before passing back to Aiken's son-in-law John Muhlenberg when Muhlenberg died childless in 1870. In 1870, two more stores were added: one operated by Prentice Farnsworth and another by Julius Kappenheimer both located on Second Street between Fourth Avenue S./First Street N.). In 1876 a schoolhouse/church complex was erected on land donated by Elijah Chapman; it became known as "Chapman's Farm" after its founder. On December 6, 1880 Union Pacific Railroad constructed a line through Belmont village connecting with its main line at Hannibal Junction near where First Street crosses Third Avenue S.; this made possible rapid growth for Belmont due to day labor requirements for locomotive builders across much of Kansas City Territory during this period. By 1890 there were nineteen businesses operating withinbelton; twenty-one churches had been founded within that decade. The population peaked at 2,462 residents according to Board of Elections records compiled in 1920; however following World War I new development led to an Decline until 1931 when it rebounded somewhat thanks largely to Granny Smith Farms agricultural products being shipped into town from outlying areas. As late as 1940 only 281 residents lived withinBelton limits while 1,898 people resided proximate thereto according to USGS cartographic data.

Belton was a small town in Missouri until the late 1800s. It was founded by farmers in 1821 and grew steadily through the years. The town center was built in 1846, and it became an important transportation junction for the area. In 1893, Belton had a population of about 1,500 people. By 1907, the population had grown to 4,000 people. The town experienced some significant growth during World War II as many residents joined the military. In 1949, Belton merged with neighboring towns of Liberty and Callaway to form what is now known as Independence Township.
