Belton is a city in and the county seat of Lee County, Missouri, United States. The population was 10,544 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Belton was founded on July 24, 1854 by John A. Belton and his brothers as a trading post on the Arkansas River near present-day Fenton. It grew rapidly during the 1850s as settlers arrived from Illinois and other states looking for land to homestead and build churches and schools. In 1857, Belton became a town when it annexed neighboring Plattsburg. By 1865, Belton had an estimated population of 20,000 people; it had reached 30,000 by 1870. The growth of industry in nearby Kansas City led to rapid suburbanization in Belton beginning in the early 1920s; today only a small segment of the original downtown remains standing as residential buildings replaced factories that closed down during World War II or during subsequent decades of economic decline in Missouri. In 1940–41, following Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor which destroyed much of Hawaii's economy (see World War II), President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered American forces to occupy all Pacific possessions under American command; this included parts of Mexico and Central America which were then subject to Spanish rule (except for Yucatán). As result of these military actions – known as "The Rough Riders" campaign – many Mexican Americans living east of Stroudsburg were forced out into the open country along US Route 65 where they lived under conditions likened to concentration camps by some observers.. Belton’s history began with its location on the south bank of the Arkansas River. early residents of this area were farmers who grew corn and beans for their local market and sold their produce to other towns in Randolph County. After serving as an important transportation hub for goods moving between Randolph County and easternKansas during the 1800s (the only time steamboats ran through Belton), the town declined during the Great Depression but regained much of its former prosperity during World War II when war-time production increased demand for goods produced here such as munitionsand aircraft parts.
