The war led to increased demand for goods produced locally such as ammunition and paper products; also diagnosed here were industries like shipbuilding that could no longer exist without access to supplies from outside countries. The first post office was established in Belton in 1830. It was moved to its present location in 1838. The railroad arrived in Belton in 1865, and the town became an important transportation center. Numerous businesses were opened during the late 1800s and early 1900s, including a bakery, a grocery store, and a machine shop. In the 1930s and 1940s, the town experienced rapid growth due to World War II trade opportunities. Belton's population reached over 100,000 by 1945. However, during the 1950s and 1960s, many ofBelton's commercial properties suffered from neglect or decline. Many of these businesses have been reborn as small-scale entities since then.
