Belton, Missouri is a small town located in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The Belton post office has been in operation since 1855. Belton was founded in 1855 by John Sennett and his family. John Sennett had come to Missouri from England as a boy and had learned to cotton plantation work on his father's farm near Carthage, Illinois. He5 became interested in business and started a general store in nearby Nixa with his brother-in-law, Andrew Greggs. In 1862, he married Sarah Potter; they raised six children together before she died in 1865 during the Civil War. John Sennett continued running the store until 1870 when he sold it to Arent Caldwell for $20,000 dollars (the sale fell through). From 1870 through 1890, he served as mayor of Belton6 and twice as county treasurer7 before retiring at age 80 years old in 1895. In 1907, Samuel Morse joined forces with William Matson9 to start Western Union Telegraph Service out of Belton10—the first commercial enterprise ever established within the town limits of St. Francois County (at that time only eight miles wide). Morse would later become one of America's most famous entrepreneurs philanthropists and donated much of his wealth to helping others through education and relief efforts during World War I11 (he also co-founded First National Bank). During World War II12 (1939–1945), BELTON resident Elmer Gantry worked for General Motors plants at Flint Hills outside Wichita KS13 until 1945 when he returned home to join his wife who remained living there after their son moved out to live with them back east14 (the couple divorced shortly thereafter). After Gantry's death15 (aged 73 years old) from congestive heart failure16 having spent many happy years surrounded by those closest to him − including 6 grandchildren17 − many people believe that this may have been the last great American industrialist whose deathbed marked an end not just for Ulysses S Grant but also for American industry generally18……..
