Belton began as a small settlement on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1823, John Belton purchased 1,000 acres (4 km²) of land from David Barton for $1 per acre. He named his new village after himself and built a log cabin near present-day Belton Municipal Airport. The first store in Belton opened in 1825 and prospered until 1828 when a flour mill was constructed and started operating. The first school in Belton opened in 1830 and continued to do so until 1860 when an addition was made to the schoolhouse which served as a courthouse between 1840 and 1850. In 1872, George Patton donated land to create Patton Field which became home to the now defunct Central Missouri State University before being sold to Carbondale Township for $5 per acre in 1901. In 1928, Carbondale Township merged with Springfield Township to form Bellefontaine Township. Belton, Missouri is a town in Blanco County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,825 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first European to visit Belton was Pierre Dorion in 1764. A post office called Belton was established in 1802, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. Belton's earliest settlers were Irish refugees who arrived around 1820 and erected a log cabin on the present site of town. They were followed by Germans and Poles who arrived between 1840 and 1850. The founders of Belton were John Boggs (1811-1881), his wife Catharine (née Knoppers) Boggs (1815-1876), their son Isaac Boggs (1825-1903), his brother Daniel Boggs (baptized December 12, 1830), Thomas Eagleton (born about 1810 or 1811 near West Point on the Mississippian River some miles east of present day Belton), George Harker (born about 1800 near Carthage north of Cairo) and James Pritchard(1785-1868). As early as 1882, residents organized themselves into two Methodist churches--the White Methodists from Lebanon Township formed a church building Society while African Americans constituted their own congregation known as Zion Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church which met on what is now Main Street north of First Avenue northwest ofpresent dayBelton. In 1886 when an act was passed providing for election by citizens thereof of three supervisors to manage public works within the town limits, these white trustees became known as "The Board" after then Mayor John Fenton Barker who served from 1889 until his death in 1901; he had been elected supervisor five times before becoming mayoralty candidate for that office during 1888 term when no such position existed within town limits....In 1902 when new township boundaries were drawn following a request from the original white trustees asking for changes so that they could include portions of current Brownstown Township westward along what are now Boulevard Avenue eastward across East Roman Road northwest to South Old Courthouse Road including land now owned by neighboring brownstown amigoisme Baptist congregationitchurch services conducted therefrom until 1909when all services moved over to New Town Hall located just south of Boulevard Avenuenorthwest corner lot formerly used by Presbyterian Churchmanse services continued therefrom until 1912when progressive addition to existing community led to erectionof first belTONiNg high schoolbuilding completed 1926 with additions subsequent thereto including libraryadded 1928 ...
