In 1873, Illinois settler John Glover acquired 640 acres of land in what is now Belton, Missouri. He named the land "Pepper" after the pepper he had seen growing in Illinois. In 1875, Pepper moved to this location with his family and began farming. By 1900, Pepper had a large pepper plantation that supported many local businesses. The plantation was sold in 1970 and today there are few remnants of it remaining. Belton's history can be traced back to the early 1800s when fur traders and soldiers traveled through this area looking for new lands to explore. One account from 1812 reports that "a great body of people" were living near what is now Belton; these people may have been the remnant of the ancient Potawatomi tribe who lived here before white settlers arrived. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1873 when John Glover purchased 640 acres of land from the Potawatomi Tribe for $10 per acre (today's equivalent price would be $185,000). The town started off as a small settlement with just 10 residents in 1880. By 1890, it had grown to over 100 residents and became an important center for trade and commerce in northwest Missouri. Many local businesses located here such as A&P grocery store and Post Office were founded by individuals or families who invested their time and resources into this community during its early years. These businesses continue to operate today including Belton's only zoning code violations business called 'The Ghetto'. During World War II, much effort was put into developing area around town which included creating infrastructure such as roads, bridges, airfields etcetera which helped support military installations within miles of town. This support also allowed for increased production at nearby factories while providing essential services such as food storage and fuel distribution to troops stationed throughout northwestern Missouri postwar!
