Belton is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. It is located on the eastern edge of the county, about 15 miles east of Springfield. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. Belton is one of five towns in Greene County that are part of the Hannibal-Springfield Metro Area Council. The other four are Carthage, Florissant, Olive Branch and Richlandville. Belton was founded by settlers from Illinois in 1855. The first post office was established in 1857, and Belton became a city in 1923. The town's history can be traced back to 1855 when several men from Illinois decided to settle near what is now Belton with the hope of finding new land to farm and raise crops. They named their new settlement "Belton" for their home state and its capital, Chicago. Over time, many more families moved into Belton and it achieved city status in 1923 due to its growth as an automobile manufacturing center during World War II. It again reached its current size after World War II when industry shifted away from auto production and toward light industrial development such as paper manufacturing and plastics processing. In 1965, Belton annexed Carthage which then became its largest municipality by population (though Carthage had no elected officials). In 2000, Belton merged with Florissant which also became its largest municipality by population (though Florissant had no elected officials). Today, both Florissant and BelTON have over 10 thousand residents combined while Carthage has only 6500 residents
