Belton is a small town in central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Belton was founded in 1836 by Daniel Boone and his family as a station on the Great Western Railway. The village grew rapidly due to its location near the confluence of the Carroll and White rivers and its natural resources: coal, oil, timber, uranium, and other minerals. Belton's economy has been based largely on agriculture since it began to be developed around World War II; today it is a bedroom community for St. Louis. The first post office in Belton was established in 1836, but did not remain open long because of competition from nearby Kolbville and West Pointe. In 1840, John Aiken opened a store here which became one of the largest in town until it closed in 1888. In 1851 Jno.[?] Stanley opened a inn which became known as Stanley's General Store (later renamed Belton Inn). In 1863 Lewis & Clark visited this area while exploring what would become Missouri Territory; they were so impressed with Belton that they named it after them when they returned to America two years later. In 1865 Isaac Senter built an early cotton gin here for processing cottonseed bolls into yarn or fabric; this industry continued until about 1920s when defenses against pests made larger gins more common and cheaper to operate than small ones. At various points during its history, Belton had churches (First Baptist Church dates back to 1846), schoolhouses (1856-1881), three hotels/motels (the Stanley Hotel from 1865-1914; Gateway House from 1916-1968; Bellefontaine Manor from 1969-2006), residences (Bellefontaine Manor dating back to 1886), mills (Cotton Mills #1 1861-1878; Cotton Mills #2 1880-1920s); two grocery stores/convenience stores (?, circa 1915); one funeral home/reinforcement yard; one doctor's office/hospital; four banks/checking accounts;; five restaurants (); six warehouses (); seventeeninness stores (); three retail businesses (); seventeen convenience stores (); eleven manufacturing businesses (). Belton and his family as a station on the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1853, the town was renamed for General John A. McClernand after he helped to win the Mexican-American War. The general and his wife lived in Belton until her death in 1885; then, they moved to Vandalia, Illinois. During World War II, Belton served as headquarters of First Army Group "C" under General George Smedley Butler III; it had no military significance before that time. Belton has two churches - Christ Episcopal Cathedral and First Baptist Church - as well as two schools: Belton High School and Saint Francis Elementary School. There is also a library, which opened in 1984.
Belton was originally founded by James and Sally Belton in 1819. The Beltons were pioneers in the area, starting a flour mill in 1825 and later establishing a tannery. In 1881, they built the first school in Belton, which still stands today. The townspeople developed a strong sense of community and cooperation that has been retained to this day. In 1916, the Belton post office was established, and it remains one of the town's most important institutions.
