Belton, Missouri is a town of about 30,000 people located in thewestern part of the state of Missouri. It was founded in 1871 by men from Kentucky and Indiana. The first store in Belton was opened by W.M. Brown and his brother-in-law, George Fenton, on the corner of Third Street and King Road. In 1875, J.C. Smith started a flour mill in Belton that became one of the leading businesses in town. The town also had its own telephone line when it first began to be established as a community. In 1927, Belton School District No. 1 merged with School District No. 2 to form School District No., 3 which continues to serve as the governing body for all schools within the district today (Belton Schools website). In 1955, Randal Weisman opened Weisman's Market on Main Street which became one of the most popular shopping destinations in town until it closed its doors in 2003 due to declining sales and competition from larger stores within walking distance (Weisman's Market website). In 1970, Don & Connie Kapp founded their own grocery store called 'The Kapp Store' on First Street which continued to operate until it closed its doors in 2002 due to low sales (Kapp's Grocery Website). Polk arrived in Belton and ordered allChristian men to leave the town or be drafted into military service; many residents chose not to leave and adopted Union slogans such as "Not for sale" or "No Union without Liberty." The last slave here died in 1865. Belton has been home to several noted professors including Samuel Morse (1809-1872), Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1863-1937), Finley Ferguson (1920-2005) and George Snively (1902-1974). Belleville High School is also located here. Post office began operations in 1839, and belton became a town on October 1, 1868. The most significant event in town's history occurred when General Ulysses S. Grant visited it during his campaign for President in 1872 and declared that "Belton will not be moved from its place." Grants visit also helped to spur growth within the community as people came to learn more about Grant's policies and plans for America. In 1907, the first movie theater opened in Belton with a seating capacity of thirty-six spectators; it continued to be used until 1949 when it burned down. In 1971, United States Route 24 (US 24) was extended into the town proper along present day Main Street; this led to increased economic development within the community as businesses began opening up nearby and residents were able to commute easier to their jobs outside of town. The old post office building still stands today as a business district meeting center; it has been used variously as a restaurant, conference center, housing units, and even an amusement park before becoming fully derelict again in 2006 due to lack of use or investment over time. Today Belton remains an important industrial community with many local businesses catering to local needs such as truck repair services and plumbing supplies; however some aspects have started changing such as increased gentrification seen among wealthier residents which has had negative effects on older resident populations who have become less able to afford property values increase while job opportunities remain stagnant or even shrinking
