Belton was founded by one of the early Mormon pioneers, John Belton. The town was named for him and his wife, Nancy. In 1831, the Mormons established a mission in what is now Missouri. This led to population growth in Belton and other nearby settlements. By 1836, Belton had a permanent hotel and post office. It also had a schoolhouse, store, and two churches. On July 4, 1837, the Mormons burned down the schoolhouse in Belton after refusing to convert to Mormonism. The town's only means of transportation then was horseback riding through narrow forest roads that were difficult to navigate at high altitude! As a result of this event, many people abandoned their homes during the 1830s gold rush era in central Missouri. However, many residents eventually returned to help rebuild Belton following the firestorm that destroyed most of downtown St Louis on August 24th of that year. In 1840-1841, another group of Mormon pioneers arrived in southern Missouri from Illinois looking for new land west of Nauvoo Lake where they could establish an LDS colony (later Utah). They called themselves "The Saints." After finding no suitable acreage within sight of their original Destination Land Provo (now Salt Lake City), they turned back around Independence Rock on October 25th 1840 and set up camp on top of Mt Zion near present-day Belleville Junction. From there they began building what would become known as The Tower or Academy House which still stands today atop Mt Zion – visible from all directions across downtown St Louis! In 1847 Brigham Young appointed Edward Stevenson as first bishopric president for much needed missionary work in India – but soon discovered he’d left too much behind when he returned home! He replace Stevenson with Lorenzo Snow who successfully proselytized hundreds more families over several years before being called away again on April 6th 1850 to lead church members into exile in Chicago due to growing political unrest throughout America! A few months later he died suddenly while attending General Conference at Nauvoo Municipal Auditorium; leaving his young son Josephine III behind as leader & proprietor (& eventual founder) Of Deseret News fame!) Belton experienced some intense population growth during its time as a center for Mormon settlement throughout central Missouri; reaching 571 by 1860 according to census records! Unfortunately this prosperity came at a price: nearly every family member departed for Utah Territory after arriving here during those years due largely to famine created by dysentery epidemics ravaging western Missouri during that decade……….. From its humble beginnings until it became an international community located just outside St Louis with over 150 buildings including 12 hotels between 1840-1860; BelTON changed profoundly from small struggling frontiertown into one of America’s leading commercial communities…………………………………………………………….
