Belton, Missouri is a small town in the Central Kansas City metropolitan area. It was founded in 1881 by John Wesley Belton and his wife, Emma. The population of Belton peaked at 9,000 in 1920 and has since declined to around 2,500. However, the Gun Slings Museum has still managed to maintain a very active community presence; their event schedule features exhibits on various firearms topics as well as demonstrations of how to sling a gun. Belton's history with handguns dates back to about 1848 when several men from Belton traveled west and discovered that Dodge City had started selling handguns. They returned home and began manufacturing their own firearms. In 1892, they produced the first revolver in Missouri. This handgun was made of brass with an ivory grip and metal frame. The Beltons also manufactured rifles and shotguns during this time period. The Gun Slings Museum was established in 1984 by Dick Fenton who had been curator of the Dodge County Historical Museum for many years before that. He organized a group of local residents who were interested in preserving gunslingers' artifacts together with some donated items from other museums across the country through a cooperative venture called "The Shotgun Shop." The museum moved into its current location on Main Street in 1989 after being housed on nearby University Avenue for over 40 years. Dick Fenton's grandson, Dan Fenton, took over management of the museum following his father's death in 2006. Under Dan's leadership it began increasing its online presence as well as expanding its collection to include more than 350 firearms from around the world. In addition to exhibiting weapons at local gun shows throughout Missouri each year as well as traveling outside into Illinois and Texas for exhibitions, Dan Fenton also founded "Gunslings International" which offers courses on how to sling a firearm using two different guns (one American-made while another is vintage).
