In that year, a post office was established and it remained in operation until 1965. The community experienced rapid growth during World War II with more than 1,000 residents serving in the military or working forthe war effort. Infant mortality rates plummeted after birth control became available and abortions were no longer considered illegal. After the war ended, Belton experienced decline as many people moved away for various reasons including increased competition from nearby Omaha and Kansas City for jobs and education opportunities. However, since 2000 Belton has seen an increase in business activity due to its location within a few miles of several major outlets such as I-70 and Interstate 35W. Belton is home to two schools: Central High School which serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade; and Stonington Elementary which serves students from kindergarten through 6th grade There are also three churches which provide worship services throughout the day: First Baptist Church (Central), Second Baptist Church (Belton) and Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Stonington).

Belton began as a trading post on the east side of the Arkansas River south of modern-day Belton. In 1853, General James H. Wilkinson founded what became known as Wilkinson's Landing on the opposite bank of the river from where Belton now stands. The landing was named in honor of General Wilkinson's older brother-in-law, John Belknap (1807-1892). The first store opened at Wilkinson's Landing in October 1853 by Wm. Aiken and his son William Aiken and their partners Amos Meeks and Gideon Meeker. Wm Aiken served as president of the company that built the store and house which still stands today at 5 N Main Street in Belton."In 1861, when Missouri became an Independent State, its governor ordered all Territorial governments to dissolve - this order caused much excitement throughout northwest Missouri because most people felt it would mean annexation by Kansas City." "In 1871, when Monsanto Company petitioned for Ulysses S Grant to be President pro tempore because he had been successful in fighting slavery in Illinois and Nebraska, Grants offer to sell them 640 acres west of Springfield for $10 per acre.'" "Monsanto Company refused to sell until they received assurances that government regulation wouldn't allow slavery within their borders." "Grant then sent a letter to every Territorial governor ordering them not to dissolve their governments without his approval but all but one replied with refusal."
Belton was founded in 1821 by Captain John Belton, a fur trader. The town was named for Captain Belton's prize-winning horse, which he had just acquired from the Sioux. The first store in Belton opened in 1825. By 1830, the population of Belton had reached 100 residents. In 1835, Baptist missionaries arrived in Belton and began preaching Christianity to the Native American community. In 1850, the town became a county seat of Morgan County and eventually lost its importance as a trading center due to competition from Nauvoo, Illinois. However, despite this decline,Belton is still known for its historical landmarks such as the Colonel J.D.'s Store (a former cotton gin), Hennepin County Courthouse (built in 1907), and Wesleyan Methodist Church (built in 1912).
