On November 3, 1871, a group of armed men came to town and killed four people at a party hosted by local politician Amos fatally wounding two others with his Colt revolver before being shot and killed himself. This event helped spur the creation of the National Rifle Association in 1874.
Belton is a small town in southern Missouri, United States. The population was 2,878 at the 2010 census. Belton is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. It is one of six communities in the St. Louis–Jefferson County, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is also included in the STL/JCS Combined statistical area. Belton was organized as a town on May 25, 1835 by James Minton and others from nearby Blue Springs Township. The first post office was established in 1836 and named for Colonel John Belton, an American Revolutionary War general who had been killed in action just south of town. The original plat for the town was dated July 6, 1837 but never filed with the county recorder because there were not enough residents to make up a plat book. In 1840 Revs John Gentry and Absalom Neely preached their last sermon at Belton's Congregational church before moving on to Nauvoo, Illinois where they became full-time missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 1845 James Minton sold his interest in the community to General David Dixon who built Blair House which still stands today as one of downtown Belton's most prominent structures. The Panic of 1893 destroyed much business activity in BelleTVille so Mayor John Fenton founded BelleTVille Normal School which continued operation until 1908 when it merged with nearby University Hill School to form what is now Bellevue Community College (BECC). A new high school building was constructed on Fourth Street across from Blair House between 1907 and 1908; this structure served as both the high school and adult education wing of BECC until its closure in 1978 due to budget cuts. In 1915 a local mill closed down leaving many families without employment; however within two years another local mill opened up providing some stability for local businesses while also creating jobs inside BECC itself. Between 1916 and 1919 a new water tower was erected on Main Street near current day Evergreen Park Drive; this structure served as both BECC's main water source as well as housing for employees during summer months when no other source could be found outside city limits Bellevue Community College entered into state government funding sources starting with 1969 through various special taxation districts known collectively as "The Bellevue Program." This program provided support including aging infrastructure upgrades such as replacement of roofs & windows throughout our campuses buildings & campus expansion including construction of three large Learning Communities – Bellevue Heights Commons Learning Annex (1984), Bellevue East Learning Annex (1991) & Bellevue North Learning Annex (1996). These buildings continue to serve students today making us oneofthelargest career schoolsinMissouri! From 1971 thru 2000 we also received substantial federal dollars under Title V Elementary Education Assistance - commonly referred to simply as "EDA" - totaling more than $130 million! With these resources we have aggressively pursued innovative programming that has resulted in over 1,100 graduates finding work since 2001! Finally we would liketothank all those that have supported our institution along these nearly half century journey!
