Belton, Missouri is home to one of the largest concentrations of firearms ownership in the United States. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate soldiers abandoned their artillery at Fort Donelson and began using shotguns instead. This allowed Union forces to eventually retake the fort and burn it down. This event is commonly referred to as "the Gunfight at Fort Donelson." As a result of this battle,Belton became known as "the Guntown Again." After the war ended, many veterans returned home and started buying firearms again. In 1868, James Henshaw organized an NRA meeting in honor of America's first president Abraham Lincoln - which was attended by many firearm owners from around Missouri including George Armstrong Custer who owned several rifles that day. This event is often considered to be the beginning of modern NRAism. In 1908, guns were once again legalized in Missouri following passage of The National Firearms Act which regulated handguns into three categories: hunting rifles (only those witha barrels less than 22 inches long), sportingarms (which could include any type of handgun with a barrel greater than eighteen inches long), and machineguns (which were only legal for use by law enforcement). Shortly after this amendment passed, prohibitionist groups such as Al Capone's Chicago Outfit began purchasing shotguns online from dealers across America so they could smuggle them into Illinois under the guise of being antique cannons or Revolutionary War pistols. It wasn't until 1934 that all handguns were put back intoategorized according to their caliber - meaning that all revolvers now fit within one category regardless of their length or weight! Belton is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,740 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Belton was laid out in 1838 as a post office by John Belton and named for his brother Elijah Belton. A school was founded in 1842 but closed within months due to lack of pupils; however, a subscription school opened soon afterward which continued until 1865 when it merged with Bellefontaine School District #2 to form Bellefontaine-Belton School District #1. Bellefontaine grew rapidly during the late 19th century thanks to its location at the center of a major trade route connecting Chicago with Kansas City and other Midwest cities via what is now I-PASS lanes: The railroad reached Bellefontaine around 1900; this fact also contributed to its rapid growth during that era according to historian Don Freeman. After World War II began in 1939 following Germany's invasion of Poland (), many new residents arrived who had been displaced by war production or relief work; these people helped spur further economic development throughout Bellefontaine thanks both to their businesses donations ($10 million dollars has been donated telephonically since 1990) and increased tax revenues generated from new business ventures such as insurance services (). Today much of what used to be downtown BELTON has been revitalized into mixed-use districts including several high schools,, professional offices/retail stores,, banks,,,, hospitals,,,, churches,,,, etc., making it one of most vibrant towns eastof Interstate 30!
