In 1868, James Belton donated land to build the first school in Belton; construction began that year and the school was dedicated on December 14th, 1870. The town's early growth stopped when railroads came to Belton in the 1880s; development instead focused on agriculture until World War II when industryrowth resumed with nearby Des Moines taking over much ofBelton's economic base. In 1948, Belton became one of twelve towns in St. Louis County to become incorporated as a city; it again experienced rapid growth after incorporation due to its location within easy reach of major employment centers such as St. Peters or Ferguson (both outside of downtown). After years of decline during the late 1960s through the early 1980s (), BelTON entered into an era characterized by significant prosperity starting around 1990 which has continued into recent times thanks largely to strong local job market fundamentals (). Belton is a small town in Bolling County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Belton was founded in 1836 by Welles Belton and his brother-in-law, Elijah Chandler. The first settler in what would become Belton was John Sibley and his family who arrived around 1837. In 1840, George Wittemeyer settled here and bought a claim on the east side of the river from Welles Belton for $10 000$. He became one of the most successful businessman in town with his store and post office which he operated until it burned down in 1857. William Haney erected a log cabin near present day Oliver Drive in 1848 and named it "Haney's Rapids". A post office called "BelTON" was established at this location on January 15, 1850, under the direction of Hiram Cobb. In 1861, when Bolling County became organized, Belton had a population of 538 residents; however, by 1870 it had grown to 1,291 residents due to new development along the south bank of the river including points such as Oliver Drive (now Locust Street) and Highway 40 (now US 70). On November 7th 1865 local resident James Cope died after a battle with Indians off Alma Road about two miles from town center while serving as an aide to General Nathan Bedford Forrest during Confederate Indian War operations on The Forks River Campaign; thus becoming one of only five Americans killed when Butler’s army invaded Missouri during that campaign On October 25th 1830 Isaac Dunham married Sarah Ann Whitehorn at Lemons Chapel located three miles west of town center following their engagement which had taken place six months earlier on September 24th 1830 Sarah Ann Whitehorn was born circa 1786/87 probably near Piqua or Jenison Township in Fayette County Illinois to Revolutionary War veteran Jesse Whitehorn who also served as an officer in the U.S Army under General Winfield Scott during later campaigns against Mexico . Her father Isaac Dunham may have been born around 1750/51 within Fayette County Illinois . Her mother's maiden name is unknown but she likelyImmigrated sometime between 1792 and 1800 aboard USS Constitution captained by Captain John Adams who arrived off North CarolinaBay on April 28th1798 en route from Portsmouth NHto Philadelphia PA.. She married Isaac Dunham approximately one year after her arrival in Missouri
