The name "BelTON" was chosen by committee when it was decided that an appropriate name for a place where people could gather together and share news and experiences pertaining to their community since there were no other towns of this size in central Missouri at that time (the area now includes parts of Johnson City, MO). In 1867, slaves were brought over to Belton from nearby Iuka and began working on farms here. In 1870-71, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line through Belton; this helped to increase business and make it easier for people to get around town. In 1901, the city annexed neighboring towns of Clayton and Dexter while still remaining an independent city. The population reached 7,000 by 1910; however, during World War II it decreased as many people left for military service or because of relocation restrictions put into place by the federal government. After the war ended in 1945,Belton experienced rapid growth with new businesses opening up due to post-war prosperity (the area had been relatively unaffected by both world wars). On November 17th 1965 local resident Darlene Johnson attempted to set off a fire at her daughter's high school which resulted in her being shot dead inside that institution; this led to increased law enforcement activity around schools throughout the state due to fears that such shootings would become more common given Johnson's death sentence
