He began trading goods with Indian traders before settling in what is now Belton County near present day Topeka on the Arkansas side of the state line. In 1881 he organized a group of settlers called "The Pioneers" who built a log cabin on an upland known as White Sands Ridge near present day Arkadelphia off Route 64 which they called their home until they sold it to J A Godfrey in 1907 for $2,500 dollars cash plus five acres (18 km²) of surrounding land that became primary school property today when Arkadelphia Elementary School was built on top of it in 1912 . From this modest beginning growth through hard work and enterprise some fifty families moved into what would become Belton over the next half century including many whose families have continued family life here since then – many with children still living here after completing high school or college degrees beyond those originally contemplated when first establishing themselves hereabouts!
